Darren Jones – Chairman
My name is Darren and I am married to Vanessa – we have three children Ethan, Jasmin and Austin. Jasmin was born with Down Syndrome.
Following Jasmin’s birth I took a great interest in the charity, leading on to becoming the Chairman in 2010. Over the last few years I have completed the London Marathon and kayaked the length of Loch Ness in order to raise funds for our group and look forward to strengthening and developing the charity for the future.
Kirsty Curtis – Secretary
My husband Darren and I have four Children, Bethany 10, Ryan 9, Olivia 6 and Sophie 4. Our youngest daughter Sophie was born on 4th June 2006. We were told after the birth that she had Down Syndrome. We were shocked at first, but soon got used to everything. We knew our lives were about to take a whole new journey which we were ready to embrace.
Life with Sophie is like a Roller Coaster ride, we have to take the rough with the smooth. Sophie has a moderate hearing loss for which she wears hearing aids. Our whole family have learnt Makaton signing so that we can communicate with Sophie, and help her communicate with other people.
Sophie started East Hunsbury Primary School in their DSP unit. She settled into school life quite quickly, made herself lots of new friends. She recently started Special Needs Gymnastics at Lings Forum, she loves it, but she does need to learn she can’t do it all with her head down and her thumb in her mouth.
Sophie having Down Syndrome has opened up a whole new world for our family, we have a fantastic support network. I think going to local support groups are brilliant they make you realise you are not alone, and it is a great opportunity to share stories and experiences.
